This is a question I have been asked alot. As far as I know, Alabama does not regulate storage charges. the Average storage charges I have come across is around $15 – $20 a day.
If you do not already have a sign up in your business stating your daily storage rate from vehicles left after 3 days of work completed, it might be a good idea to put one up.
I have been told by many people, that if you do not have a license to store vehicles, you can not charge a storage fee. Well, I just dont know about all that yet.
The way I see it, automotive shops invest a lot of money in repairing vehicles, and when a customer does not pay and pick up the vehicle in a timely manner, the shop owner’s investment and space is tied up, so a daily storage rate is added to encourage the owner to pay and pick up the vehicle.
I will be going to court soon on a storage issue soon, I will let you know the out come of the court case. This will clear up, if automotive shops have the right to charge storage fees.
